Powerful Scientific Presentation (SS 2009)

Aims of the course

The participants learn the essential features of oral and poster presentations that contribute to making a long-lasting, professional impression. (Part 1)

In a half-day workshop, the participants practice their presentations, are able to critically review the presentations of their peers and give each other feedback. (Part 2)

All participants find out what they do well (strengths) and gather ideas for what to work on next when presenting their research work. (Part 2)

Part 1:

  • Essential features of powerful presentations: audience-orientation, preparation and structure of a presentation, presentation techniques.
  • Guidelines for the design and production of powerful posters; oral presentation of posters.

Transfer phase:
Participants apply their knowledge by preparing (during the time between parts 1 and 2) either a poster OR and oral presentation about their research work.

Part 2:

  • Poster presentation (three minutes each) or oral presentations (ten minutes each) by the participants.
  • Application of feedback criteria for poster and oral presentations.

 

Set up

  •  Maximum number of participants is 12
  • Part 1: Input from the lecturer, interspersed with small group exercises.
  • Part 2: 4-hour workshop with a maximum of 6 persons giving either a poster or an oral presentation. All participants receive feedback from the trainer and the other participants. The presentations will be videotaped.

Evaluation

 evaluation results
