Objectives

After this course, the participants are able to:

  • identify the essential features of oral and poster presentations that contribute to making a long-lasting, professional impression
  • apply elements of best practice to the preparation of a new presentation (poster or oral presentation)
  • present their research work in an audience-friendly and professional manner
  • critically review the presentations of their peers and formulate constructive feedback
  • use personal feedback to self-reflect on their own performance and identify ways to optimize their presentation skills in the future
     

Content

Part 1:
Essential features of professional presentations: audience-orientation, goals and structure, creating and maintaining audience interest, signposting, use of body language, design and use of visual aids
Guidelines for the design and production of powerful posters; oral presentations of posters

 

Transfer phase:
Participants apply their knowledge by preparing (during the time between parts 1 and 2) either a new poster OR a new oral presentation about their research work.

Part 2:
Poster presentations (3 minutes each) or oral presentations (ten minutes each) by the participants.
Application of feedback criteria for poster and oral presentations.
 

Methods

 

Part 1:
Input from the lecturer, interspersed with small group exercises.

 

Part 2:
4h-workshop with a maximum of 6 persons giving either a poster or an oral presentation. All participants receive feedback from the trainer and the other participants. The presentations will be videotaped and participants receive a DVD of their presentation on request.
 

Target group

Doctoral students in the field of life sciences only. Maximum number of participants is 12.
