iCoNeT - International PhD-Program Computational Neuroscience & Neurotechnology
iCoNeT - International PhD-Program Computational Neuroscience & Neurotechnology (2010 - 2014)
The Bernstein Center Freiburg offers a multi-disciplinary, internationally compatible PhD Program in Computational Neuroscience & Neurotechnology. We provide PhD students from different backgrounds in natural or technical sciences with a thorough scientific and methodological basis in computational neuroscience for an academic or application-oriented career.
This PhD program provides students with theoretical and experimental expertise in
- neurobiology and cognition (structural and functional principles of the brain; signaling at different levels in the brain; neural coding, processing and computation; perception and action; learning and development)
- physics and mathematics (modeling and simulation of neurons and networks; dynamical systems and statistical physics; stochastic processes and statistics; systems and signals; time series analysis; adaptation and control)
- computer science and systems technology (information processing and computation; machine learning, classification and optimization; data mining; micro-systems technology of brain-machine-interfacing; industrial application of insights and methods from computational neuroscience)
- bio-medicine (diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to function and dysfunction of the brain; invasive and non-invasive measurement and analysis of brain dynamics; medical applications of brain-machine-interfacing).
- Courses on secondary skills.
The PhD program is open to students with a background in the natural or technical sciences, both from Germany or abroad.
To internationalize the program we are supported by the DAAD funding programs GSSP, IPID and STIBET.
How to apply?
There are several ways to join the PhD-Program iCoNeT:
- Apply directly to one of our open positions in research projects of the BCF.
- Join us by applying to the Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctoral Program "EuroSPIN - European Study Program in Neuroinformatics". Instructions on how to apply are detailed on the EuroSPIN website. Application deadlines are November 30 each year. Short-listed candidates will be interviewed in January. Decisions will be communicated to applicants end of February and the selected applicants will start in September.
- Join us by applying to the Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctoral Program "NeuroTime - Neural Processing of Time". Instructions on how to apply are detailed on the NeuroTime website. Application deadlines are January 15 each year. Short-listed candidates will be interviewed in February. Decisions will be communicated to applicants end of February and the selected applicants will start in September.
- Join us by applying to the Spemann Graduate School for Biology & Medicine. Instructions on how to apply are detailed on the SGBM website. Recruitment starts on February 1st, 2012 and runs until April 1st, 2012. Registration deadline is March 25th, 2012. Short-listed candidates will be interviewed on July 3-5, 2012. Decisions will be communicated to applicants Mid July 2012 and selected applicants will start in September 2012.
- Provide your own funding, e.g. through a DAAD fellowship (to search for the appropriate fellowship you can use the DAAD Fellowship Database). For these fellowships you typically need to define a research proposal, which has to be worked out by the applicant and the hosting supervisor. Thus, please have a look at the websites of our PIs and find out whose research interests you most. You may contact that PI directly and ask whether he/she is willing to supervise you, support your application for funding and discuss a putative project. Once the research proposal has been accepted you can apply to our PhD program by filling in the electronic application form.
