iCoNeT PhD Conference:
“Spiking Neural Networks – Dynamics, Structure and Plasticity”

The task of unravelling and understanding the principles of information processing in neuronal circuits (and the brain, more generally) poses, apart from numerous experimental questions, some of the most challenging theoretical problems of modern science, given the tremendous complexity involved at all levels (from molecules to behaviour).
Addressing fundamental questions towards this goal, such as the nature of neuronal coding, signal transmission and adaptation/plasticity can be adequately performed by theoretical investigations at the level of single neurons and neuronal assemblies. Spiking neural networks are models inspired in natural computing, based on dynamic, event-driven processing. Over the past decade or so, they have become a central research tool for studying several emergent computational properties of neuronal circuits and elucidating the links between computational properties and the global network behaviour.

Of critical relevance, in this regard, are the intricate relationships between the spatial organization (network structure) and temporal evolution (network dynamics) as well as the overall effect of different adaptation mechanisms.
Our aim is to invite distinguished scientists, whose recent work in the field of Computational and Theoretical Neuroscience is of focused interest and relevance to the work being currently developed at the BCF. The first day of the conference will be focused on the dynamics of spiking neural networks and the interplay between structure and dynamics, whereas the second day will be reserved for neuronal plasticity, namely theory and models of spike-timing-dependent plasticity, and the impact of plasticity in shaping the dynamics and computational capacity of spiking networks.
